New York City

Since 2010, CEA has invited various Senior Mastery groups to travel to New York City to further develop their passion for their area of study and develop an appreciation and understanding of what their peers in other mastery groups do. Dance, Music, Voice, Visual Arts, and Journalism groups have been invited to travel to New York, during which time they participate in multiple workshops and master classes, attend performances, and visit museums pertinent to their areas of study. 

*Trips to New York City take place every two to four years and include students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.

Dance

Classes have included jazz, musical theatre, modern dance, African dance, and broadway at The Ailey School , The Taylor School, Peridance Center, Steps, Broadway Dance Center, and 5678 Dance, among others. They tour Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall.

Students attend performances, including:

Broadway Musicals
New York City Ballet
Ballet Hispanico

Music and Voice

Classes have included: classical repertoire, jazz improvisation, sight-reading, musical theatre, and individual and group critique and feedback sessions with professional classical, jazz, pop, and Broadway musicians at professional music studios and New York University, as well as have a private tour of Carnegie Hall.

In May 2010, the CEA Senior Choir was invited to join a group of 150 voices for a Memorial Day Concert in the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall by Dr. Patrick Freer, a professor of choral music from Georgia State University.

Journalism

Conchita Magazine has attended the Scholastic Press Association Spring Conference at Columbia University, a journalism conference with workshops usually reserved for only high school and college students. Columbia University Journalism Conference.

Journalism students in Conchita Magazine and CTV have also had the opportunity to tour the Columbia University School of Journalism and visit several TV studios, including NBC Studios and CNN and have up-close encounters with individuals who help create the most watched news in the nation. They even experienced being in the newsroom both at NBC and CNN during breaking news!

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Mastery takes a museum tour of New York, learning about a variety of different artists, art forms and genres. Among the museums visited are the Guggenheim, MoMA, The Whitney, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
