Think about your reward system
It is always a good idea to give your child rewards when they have accomplished something truly special, but too many rewards will prove to be pointless. If your child gets rewarded for every little milestone, they can come to expect rewards for everything. Eventually, they will only complete activities for the prize, not the benefits behind it. Plus, kids can creatively work around their reward system when behavior becomes dependent on the reward. Instead, focus on verbal praise when your child has completed something small, and offer physical prizes for much larger things such as a graduation ceremony.
Understand their capabilities
At the end of the day, both rewards and punishments are pointless if your child is unable to complete the task. You need to look at both their physical and mental capabilities to fully understand if your standards need to be raised or lowered. For example, if your child is struggling to learn to play a song on the piano, have a conversation with them to see if you can understand why. Maybe their teacher has put a lot of pressure on them, or perhaps they are having problems reading the music. You will never know until you discover the root of the problem.
Surround them with other successful people
Children learn simply by being around others in a social environment. To ensure success and that they are motivated to do anything they want, put them in an environment where they can thrive. This includes starting them off in private elementary schools and continuing into middle schools.
