The second grade celebrated the Lunar New Year! Their study of China began as they read Day of the Dragon King from the Magic Treehouse Series, which they read along with the Magic Treehouse “Fact Tracker,” to help break down complex subjects into simple concepts and reach conclusions through the logic of cause and effect, in addition to helping them gain an appreciation for the wonders of the world.
In conjunction with their reading, the grade covered geography and culture of Asian countries in social studies, learned about Asian calligraphy, and utilized the theme to guide learning across various areas of study, including math, art, and dance! In art class with Ms. Vazquez, students created beautiful artwork centering around the year of the snake and created a giant dragon, which they used in their parade. In creative movement, Ms. Kenia choreographed a Chinese-inspired dance. This morning, students dressed up in traditional Chinese costume and shared their learning with their families through their Chinese New Year celebration.
After their presentation, Yanchi Sun (Adelaide and Madeleine’s mom) gave a special presentation to the second grade about Chinese culture. They learned new words and phrases, watched a video from her home country, read a story, and even had prizes for answering trivia questions correctly! We are so grateful to Ms. Sun for her time, generosity, and enthusiasm in sharing her culture with our second grade class! To complete their celebration, students will be having a Chinese banquet for lunch!
Thank you to our amazing second grade team, Ms. Estevez, Mrs. Llerena, and Mrs. Valhuerdi, and to Ms. Kenia and Ms. Vazquez, who together have all guided their students through a wonderful unit of learning and who supported them as they discover and fall in love with the wonders of the world. Thank you to the volunteer moms who helped prepare and serve the beautiful luncheon. Thank you for helping make CEA more than a school!
