More Than A School

"It takes nothing to be kind, but it means everything."

From January 22-26th, CEA participated in the nation-wide Great Kindness Challenge (www.thegreatkindnesschallenge.com). Schools from all across the nation got together to raise awareness of the great difference simple acts of kindness can make. These are things that we as a community already see and do every day, and which make us the special community we are.

Each day this week, teachers worked with their students on different activities related to kindness and shared ideas on how we can continue to grow as kind individuals and as a community of kindness, compassion, and empathy. More than ever, we came together as a community to lead by example. Each child at CEA received a "kindness checklist" with ideas on how they can each make a difference through simple acts of kindness, as well as a "Family Kindness Checklist" to work on at home - simple ways in which they can become closer to their families and participate in this challenge together.

During recess, Student Council and CTV set up "Kindness Booths," tables dedicated to taking the time to write appreciation notes to their families, friends, and teachers, Valentine's cards for the elderly, and appreciation notes to those serving in the military. On another day, they filled the school with messages of kindness written on the sidewalks of the CEA Central Park in chalk. They all joined together to sing a song, "Humble and Kind," taking into account the meaning of the lyrics.

To finish the week the entire school got together to create a kindness chain. 1,241 hands and 621 hearts represented an infinite number of kind acts. Each child also wrote down a thought about kindness on a strip of paper, creating a chain with their classmates. The student council representatives for each class then held their class' chain in a promise to continue our culture of kindness every day.

The real challenge is not in a week of kind acts. The challenge is living a life of kind acts when no one notices. Thank you for all you do every day - the things we know about and those little kindnesses you do each day that change the world and create this special community we share. You do make a difference.

THANK YOU!
