CEA Middle School Choir performed at Carnegie Hall

CEA's Middle School Choir was invited to join a group of 150 voices for a Memorial Day Concert in the Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall on May 29 by Dr. Patrick Freer, a professor of choral music from Georgia State University.

Dr. Freer first met the choir and their director, Ms. Loly Lopez, at the UM Honor Choir in 2008, where he was conducting a workshop. He was so impressed with their demeanor and preparedness, that he invited them to be part of this amazing opportunity--a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The seventeen members of the choir who were able to sing at Carnegie Hall and their chaperones had a wonderful time in New York. The pictures below show the group arriving at the airport, on the bus, having fun at a restaurant, posing at the hotel along with Ms. Loly and some of their moms, in-between rehearsals at the hotel, and posing with their Carnegie Hall conductor, Dr. Patrick Freer.

All pictures were provided by CEA teacher, Mrs. Campos--proud mom of choir member, Martha!

Interlochen Summer Arts Camp

Two CEA and Conservatory students, Harmony and True Jackson, attended the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp. Its solid reputation makes it a premier summer arts program for aspiring artists in grades 3 through 12. Interlochen brings togehter students, faculty and staff from all 50 U.S. states and more than 40 countries. Each summer, 2,500 students come to Interlochen to train intensively with renowned instructors, producing more than 400 presentations in music, theatre, dance, visual arts, creative writing and motion picture arts. Campers can participate in and enjoy several performances, readings and art exhibitions each week. It is for many students “the best summer of their lives.”

True and Harmony attended three-week sessions. Their day started at 6:45 a.m. After classes and dinner, they had time to relax before the call to quarters at 9 p.m. True joined the music camp for percussion and had art as his elective, with classes in arts and crafts, painting, and drawing. Harmony participated in their dance camp, concentrating on jazz, modern dance, ballet and improv. At the end of the three weeks, there was a performance open to the community.

Dance Intensive in Madrid

Another CEA and Conservatory student, Cecilia de Socarraz-Novoa, attended a dance intensive program for two weeks in July at “Scaena, Centro de Artes Escénicas” in Madrid, Spain. It was founded in 2002 by Carmen Roche, an internationally renowned dancer and teacher, who started her professional career at the age of 13 with the highly respected flamenco company, “Ballet de Antonio” and has become every teacher’s master teacher. Her center for the performing arts was the first privately owned Conservatory in Madrid to offer official degrees in classical dance, Spanish dance and modern dance. What an amazing opportunity!

Cecilia’s program included intermediate-advanced level in classical dance and intermediate pointe taught by acclaimed dancers Maria Garcia and Emanuelle Broncine.
