This year’s Dance Intensive had three packed weeks, from June 14 to July 2nd, under the direction of Ms. Danella Bedford and Patricia Strauss. Guest teachers included Aeeta Dias (Bollywood), Mariana Alvarez (ballet), Erika Johnson (gymnastics, acting) and Ali Goudreau (hip hop).
Participants had the usual demanding curriculum of daily, ballet technique and repertory classes, plus several special workshops that included choreography, stage crew, musical theater, dance critique, and sewing (where many of the girls made the costumes they would wear for the showcase). The intensive also featured a hat competition, a choreography competition—where the winning pieces are chosen for the showcase, a special 4th of July competition, and a yearly favorite, “The Spa” where dancers get to pamper each other after three weeks of hard work.
Dance Intensive Showcase
On Thursday, July 1st, 2009, the Rosita Segovia Theater hosted the Dance Intensive Showcase, which brings to light how much the girls have learned and have grown as dancers. The performance included repertoire from Swan Lake, original choreography by some of the participants, and a piece from Cats, among others. The showcase concluded with an original ballet, choreographed by Ms. Danella, based on Alice in Wonderland.
